Founded by Tolgahan Çoğulu and Sinan Cem Eroğlu in 2011, the Microtonal Guitar Duo has been playing microtonal Middle Eastern music on modified classical guitars: a microtonal guitar designed by Tolgahan Cogulu in 2008 and a fretless guitar. Their repertoire consists of their arrangements of maqam-based music of Middle Eastern cultures and Western classical music, original compositions that have been composed for the duo, as well as jazz, Latin, folk, and experimental music. Their debut album “Microtonal Guitar Duo” was released by Kalan Music in 2015.

The first prize winner in the 2014 Margaret Guthman Musical Instruments at Georgia Tech, Microtonal Guitar has been designed by Tolgahan Çoğulu in 2008. It was accepted and funded as a scientific research project at the Istanbul Technical University Dr. Erol Uçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music. All the frets of the microtonal guitar are movable in the channels under each string. Besides, any number of frets can be inserted into or removed from the fretboard.

The duo has appeared in many festivals, universities, and conferences, including New York Guitar Festival, Iserlohn Guitar Festival, Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival, Brno Guitar Festival, Sarajevo Guitar Festival, Santo Tirso Guitar Festival, Malaysia CGS Guitar Festival, Plovdiv Guitar Festival, Postojna Guitar Festival, Balkan Micro Fest, Alessandria Echos Festival, University of Athens, University of Surrey, Aberdeen University, University of Memphis, Mozarteum University, Wien University, Codarts University, Toronto York University.
