Elia Portabales was born in Vigo, where she began her viola studies with Professor Isabel Abril. She studied the Bachelor at the “Musikene” Higher School of Music of the Basque Country with Professor David Quiggle. Later, she continued her musical training at the Hochschule für Musik der Stadt Basel (Switzerland) with Prof. Silvia Simionescu, where she obtained a Master Performance (2010-2013) and a Master in Pedagogy (2013-2015). She was a member of the Spanish National Youth Orchestra “JONDE”, the World Youth Orchestra, and the Escuela de Altos Estudios Musicales of Santiago de Compostela.

She is currently the viola soloist of the Neues Orchester Basel (Switzerland) and is a member of the Basel Sinfonietta (orchestra specialising in contemporary music) and the Geneva Camerata, as well as working regularly with other Swiss orchestras such as the Swiss Orchestra , the Kammerorchester Basel, the City Light Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne (orchestra specialising in film music), the Berner Kammerororchester and the European Philharmonic Orchestra of Switzerland.

She is a member of the NOB Kammersolisten and the Trio Komkreis with whom she regularly gives chamber music concerts in Switzerland. She also works as a viola and violin teacher. She currently has private pupils (beginners, amateurs and students in professional training) and is a member of the NOB Academy Project.

She also has her own online viola workshop, where she teaches students from all over the world through the Internet; and she is a member of the online educational projects AIYA Masterclass (for students from Asia) and Proviweb (for students from Latin America).
