LECTURES

Presented by the festival artists, MIGF lectures provide students and all community members opportunities to expand their understanding of a variety of musical subjects. Each lecture is free and open to public.

19th century music specialist and guitarist Marco Battaglia will present a lecture on Articulation, phrasing and ornaments in music of the Classic and Romantic periods. In this lecture. Mr. Battaglia will describe the evolution of articulation, phrasing and some parts of the rules used in ornaments through an analysis of various period sources (mostly treatises and methods) and works written by the most authoritative scholars including Brown, Dolmetsch, Dart, Donington, and one of their critics, Neumann.

Violinist Cihat Askin will present a lecture on Turkish Makam System. In this lecture, Dr. Askin will discuss rhythmic (usûl) and modal (makam) systems in traditional Turkish music (including folk, classical, and sufi music), then, review the basic instrumental and vocal forms. .

Traditional Turkish and Sufi Music will be presented by the Anatolian Ensemble members. Turkish kemeche virtuoso Neva Ozgen and cellist Yelda Ozgen will demonstrate the major modes (makams) in traditional Turkish and Sufi music through preludes or interludes (taksims). They will discuss the role of improvisation in traditional Turkish music, both from compositional and performance perspectives. They will combine these improvisational forms with several composed works by the Ottoman composers written in the style of instrumental forms, such as peshrev and saz semaisi.

Professor of Musicology David Dolata will preview the forthcoming TABLATURE 1300–1750. An Encyclopedia, a collection of 435 essays, full-color facsimiles, and transcriptions by 30+ leading scholars and players in over 40 types of tablature. Produced by the Programme Ricercar and International Research Program in Musicology at the Centre d’Études Supérieures de la Renaissance (Université François-Rabelais de Tours/Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Tours, France (CESR), the publication will appear in the Collection “Épitome Musical” by Brepols Publishers in Turnhout, Belgium. In addition to co-editing the book, Dr. Dolata is the author of 85 individual essays and 39 transcriptions.

Guitarist, composer, and pedagogue Dr. Mesut Özgen will present a lecture on Designing Technical Training Programs. In this lecture, Dr. Özgen will discuss the bio-mechanical principals of guitar technique and how to design short- and long-term training programs for guitarists based on exercise physiology.
