2018 MIGF CONCERT ARTIST
PERFORMANCE COMPETITION

The MIGF is pleased to announce the inaugural Concert Artist Performance Competition (CAPC) for solo classical guitar. The CAPC will run concurrently with the festival in three rounds from February 23-25, 2018.
UPDATED SCHEDULE: The Preliminary Round will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm.
APPLICATION DEADLINE IS EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 17, 2018.

Prizes

  • 1st Prize: $5,000 Cash*
  • 2nd Prize: $2,500 Cash*
  • 3rd Prize: $1,000 Cash*
  • 4th Prize: $500 Cash*

*Per U.S. IRS regulations, all prizes may be subject to 30% federal tax withholding for foreign prize-winners. U.S. prize-winners will be issued an IRS-1099 Form.

Jury

Τhe jury will consist of professionals with established reputations in the music world. The chair of the jury will be renowned guitar artist and pedagogue Professor Frank Koonce.

General Guidelines

  • Open to guitarists of all ages and nationalities.
  • Competitors will perform solo pieces on the six-string classical guitar.
  • Individual movements from major works are acceptable.
  • Concertos or chamber music are not permitted.
  • The competition will have three rounds during the 2018 MIGF at Florida International University School of Music in Miami, Florida.
  • Competitors’ Orientation Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2018 from 5:30-6:30 pm. All competitors are expected to attend this meeting in order to have a place in the Preliminary Round. All registered competitors who cannot attend the meeting must contact the MIGF Artistic Director by February 10, 2018.
  • All competitors will submit their free choices for all rounds in their application form. Any changes to the submitted program may be made until February 10, 2018.

Preliminary Round

  • All competitors will perform before a panel of five (5) judges on February 23, 2018 from 8:00 am – 12:30 pm.
  • This round will be closed to the public.
  • Each competitor must perform the following, not to exceed twelve (12) minutes of total performance time, including the time between pieces:
    • A free choice program with a minimum of two (2) contrasting styles.
  • The judges will have the option of stopping the competitor during the performance.
  • Up to eight (8) competitors will advance to the Semi-Final Round. All decisions by the judges are final.
  • The semifinalists will be announced at the intermission of evening concert on Friday, February 23rd.

Semi-Final Round

  • The competitors will perform before a panel of seven (7) judges on February 24, 2018 from 9:30 am.
  • This round will be open to the public.
  • Each competitor must perform the following, not to exceed fifteen (15) minutes of total performance time, including the time between pieces:
    • A free choice program with a minimum of two (2) contrasting styles.
  • Competitors who exceed the allowed fifteen (15) minutes will be stopped.
  • Works performed in the Preliminary Round may be repeated in this round.
  • Up to four (4) competitors will advance to the Semi-Final Round. All decisions by the judges are final.
  • The finalists will be announced at the intermission of evening concert on Saturday, February 24th.

Final Round

  • The competitors will perform before a panel of nine (9) judges on February 25, 2018 from 3:00 pm.
  • This round will be open to the public.
  • The total performance time, including the time between pieces, must not exceed twenty five (25) minutes.
  • Each competitor must perform the following, not to exceed twenty-five (25) minutes of total performance time, including the time between pieces:
    • A free choice program with a minimum of two (2) contrasting styles.
  • Competitors who exceed the allowed twenty five (25) minutes will be stopped.
  • Works performed in the Semi-Final Round may NOT be repeated in the Final Round. Works performed in the Preliminary Round, but not performed in the Semi-Final Round, may be repeated in the Final Round.
  • Judges have the right to award all or some of the prizes or none.
  • The winners will be announced at the intermission of evening concert on Sunday, February 25th. All decisions by the judges are final.

Application

Application Deadline: February 17, 2018.
Early Registration Fee: $180 (only competition); $230 (with a festival pass), automatically applied if registered by October 25, 2017.
Regular Registration Fee: $200 (only competition); $250 (with a festival pass)
Registration fees are non-refundable. Application and  fee must be submitted and paid online no later than February 17, 2018 by 7:00 pm EST.
All applications to the competition should include the following:

1. First, complete online payment through ticket solutions here. After completing payment, you will be provided an “order number”. Please make a pdf copy of your payment receipt “Print at Home”.

2. Download and fill out the application form (PDF). Please enter the “order number” obtained through the above process in the appropriate field of the form. This will provide proof of payment along with the pdf copy of your payment “Print at Home” receipt. The application form is a fillable pdf that may be filled out on the computer or printed and filled out manually. Either way, it must be printed and signed before submitting via email in the next step.

3. Repertoire list for the proposed free choices by filling out the third page of application form (PDF).

4. Please submit the completed and signed application form (PDF), the repertoire list, and a PDF copy of your payment “Print at Home” receipt via email with attachments to MIGF Artistic Director Mesut Özgen at mozgen@fiu.edu. The subject line of the email should read “MIGF Performance Competition 2018” followed by your full name.
